foreword

What is the radiator?

Radiator, as the name implies, is a device that transfers heat generated by machinery or other equipment during operation to the environment through heat conduction, heat convection, and heat radiation to avoid affecting its normal operation. With the rapid development of modern industry, radiators are widely used in avionics, medical equipment, chemical biology and other fields, and at the same time pose a huge challenge to heat dissipation technology.

1. Classification of cooling technologies

At present, radiator cooling technology is divided into air cooling, liquid cooling, phase change cooling and micro-channel cooling technology. Air cooling technology can be divided into natural convection and forced convection. Natural convection uses air as the heat transfer medium, and takes away heat through the flow of air around the fins of the radiator. It is the cooling method used by most low-power electronic devices at present. Forced convection is to drive the fluid movement through external forces such as fans and pumps, so as to take away the heat emitted by the device. The cooling capacity of forced convection is about 5 to 10 times that of natural convection.

2. Coolant technology

Liquid cooling technology is divided into direct liquid cooling and indirect liquid cooling. Direct liquid cooling technology refers to the heat exchange process in which the cooling fluid directly contacts the heating element, which is rarely used at present. The indirect liquid cooling technology is to transfer the heat of the heating element indirectly to the cooling medium sealed in the circulating pipe through the cold plate composed of a closed cavity of high thermal conductivity metal such as copper and aluminum, and exchange heat through the active flow of the cooling medium.

Phase change cooling technology uses the phenomenon of heat absorption of dry ice, liquid nitrogen and other chemical substance in the process of phase change (solid melting/sublimation, liquid evaporation) for cooling. The phase change cooling technology represented by heat pipe can realize the heat dissipation of devices with high heat flux density. The heat pipe is composed of high-purity oxygen-free copper tube and internal capillary structure. The heat pipe uses liquid as the cooling medium, and the inside of the tube is evacuated. When one end of the heat pipe is heated, the liquid in the pipe evaporates into gas, and the well quickly reaches the other end of the heat pipe to condense, and the condensed liquid returns to the heated end of the heat pipe through the capillary structure under the action of capillary force, thereby realizing high-efficiency heat exchange.
